Our first week in social studies went quite smoothly. We brainstormed what ideas and perspectives we had about budgeting and spending money. The classes worked in groups for the first time this year learning that listening and equal participation is the key to having a smoothly running group. On Friday, all of the learners signed in on Edmodo, chose an icon, and some learners posted on their group's wall. We discussed the expectations for posting personalized icons and the content they may post on the walls. Although Edmodo is a safe, Wake county approved site and only learners, parents with access codes, and I can access, icons need to not be photos of the learners or copyrighted photos. All posts need to be school related and not of a personal or inappropriate nature. Although it looks and appears to be structured a bit like Facebook, this site is for academic networking only. As a teacher, I am able to access resources from educators all over the world, while learners, for safety reasons, may only network with other learners in their class. They may share useful research sites and files. Parents may access with their personal codes that I will send home with or email to them. You will be able to monitor your student's assignments, quiz responses, and grades that are given. Learners will receive online badges similar to the one above once they complete their assignments in their content area and for many other achievements. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me at email@example.com.
